About Me

organizing your next move

As a military spouse, I have a lot of experience packing and moving. I have learned what to leave out until the very last minute and what can be put away long before the move. I have learned what will be needed the first night in the new home and what can wait several days or even weeks to be unpacked. My blog can help you get through the organizational aspects of your move. Once you are organized, everything else will fall into place and the rest of the move will be nothing more than moving boxes here and there.

Keeping Your Storage Unit Pest-Free: 3 Tips That Can Help

Common pests such as mice, moths, and cockroaches can easily infest a storage unit and cause damage to the contents of this unit. While most storage facilities do utilize pest control measures, these measures may not be enough to keep your storage unit pest free. This is because the pest control measures utilized by the storage facility will not take place inside each individual unit. That is why it is always best to utilize a few pest control measures of your own to make sure your stored belongings remain protected. The three tips below can help you to accomplish that goal.

Use The Pest Dettering Power Of Essential Oils

Essential oils produce a smell that is pleasant to many people, but overwhelming for many pests. Consequently, these oils have proven to be powerful all-natural pest deterrents. Lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus oils are some of the most commonly used essential oils for this purpose. When using essential oils as part of your pest control plan, you will want to start by placing bowls or jars around the edge of your storage unit. Next, you will need to soak cotton balls in the essential oils you plan to use. Finally, place the soaked cotton into your containers. For best results, you will want to replace the soaked cotton balls from time to time as the potency of your oils will wear off over time.

Use Shelving Units Or Pallets To Elevate Items

Storing items directly on the floor of your storage unit can make them more susceptible to infestation since they will be easier for pests to access. Choosing to store items on the floor can also result in moisture building up between the floor and your stored items. This moisture can attract some types of common pests. This can be easily prevented by elevating your stored items using either pallets or shelving units.

Use Furniture Covers And Plastic Storage Bins To Eliminate Hiding Places

Many common pests will seek out places that provide them with a safe place to hide and breed. The furniture and cardboard boxes that are found in many storage units provide the perfect hiding place for many of these pests. You can ensure that your storage unit does not offer this by choosing to use furniture covers and plastic storage bins that provide an airtight seal preventing pests from getting inside. Not only will this make your storage unit less appealing to pests, but it will also ensure that these pests are unable to damage your belongings as they attempt to burrow deep inside.

Keep these pest-free storage unit tips in mind when looking at one from a local facility.
